The caldera

The caldera

Today I took a cruise to the Caldera and Thirassia, islands near Santorini. Now by cruise I mean on a proper boat not one of those floating hotels. Santorini is part of a volcano system with the Caldera at the centre. The landscape was barren with the exception of a few weeds adding a little colour to the otherwise stark environment. From here we sailed to a nearby thermal hot spring for a short swim. It was not exactly hot but it was warm enough.

After the hot spring the boat docked at the island of Thirassia. Lunch was a Greek BBQ, Octopus tentacle skewers cooked on a grill over a wood BBQ.. After lunch I hiked up to a small village. The climb up the escarpment was one of the hardest I have ever done. I am sure the gradients were closing in on 30% as my legs were burning through the effort. There was not much in the village to justify the effort. Later in the afternoon the boat sailed back to Santorini.

Back in Santorini at my base of Fira I boarded the local bus and joined the throngs of tourists heading to Oia for sunset. I avoided the main overcrowded sunset area and selected a spot about 500m around the corner. The sunset was very nice but best in the world I’m not so sure. But hey when you go to Paris you must see the Eiffel tower, in London it is Big Ben, in Athens the Acropolis and in Santorini it is the sunset from Oia. I can tick that one off the bucket list.
