Acropolis Now
18.05.2013 - 18.05.2013
Today was ' museum day' in Athens meaning all monuments were free entry. With this in mind I thought I better start early to beat the crowds and forecast heat. First up was the Acropolis area. As expected crowds were there early not helped by the presence of a couple of groups from cruise ships. Luckily I managed to get my ticket last night and could jump the queue. The site was interesting to visit with great views to be had of Athens city to the sea. From here I made my way to the Agora, Temple of Zeus and finally Panathenaic Stadium which is the site of the first modern Olympics held in 1896.
It was starting to get quite hot now so I took a long lunch break Greek style. Next to my hotel is a shop that sells all sorts of religious items including a pulpit. How cool. I really want my very own pulpit for home but how would I get it on the plane and even harder get approval from Big M!
Emerging again in the late afternoon I went to watch the changing of the Greek guard at Syntagma square. I love their overly exaggerated marching style. Next I walked through the Monastiraki Flea Market, a trash & treasure type market, and then onto the Plaka area for a Mousaka dinner. Watched sunset from Filippos hill then just wandered back to the hotel catching a performance from a Greek orchestra complete with traditional greek instruments in front of the Acropolis museum.
