Plan was for an early start this morning to climb Arthur's Seat before the forecasted weather arrived. Unfortunately it the showers came earlier than predicted so I abandoned Arthur's Seat and instead caught the train out to Forth bridges, 2 very impressive spans across the Firth of Forth. My small umbrella finally saw it's first action of the holiday but it could only take 1 hour of the Edinburgh weather before it collapsed. I scuttled into a souvenir shop to purchase a more hardy umbrella for the day and week ahead. Spent rest of the morning and early afternoon exploring Edinburgh castle.

The afternoon required indoor activities so I joined Mark Keep's Close walking tour of the old underground closes (streets) of Edinburgh. This was really interesting. Current Edinburgh was built directly on top of old Edinburgh vaulting in the old homes and streets. It is like a time capsule below. Really fascinating. Next up was St Giles cathedral and it's quaint Thistle chapel. There a thistles carved into the stone ceiling and scottish themed carvings on the walls including an angel playing the bagpipes!

Will spend rest of afternoon tending to some tedious chores. Tomorrow I'm off to the Isle of Skye and Loch Ness for 3 nights. Let's hope I see some Sky!

Update:
Found out that a bagpipe troop were playing outside Edinburgh castle this evening. It was still drizzling outside but nothing too drastic so decided to brave the conditions. It was great to watch the band and the Scottish dancing girls. However the rain continued to get heavier & the wind gusted making it real cold but none of either the band or the dancing girls missed a beat. Eventually the rain got too heavy and I scampered on back to the hostel. And the band played on!
