Bikes, tofu and temples of Borobudur

semi-overcast 31 °C

Taking all day to travel to the Indonesian Island of Java with a 2 hour flight delay, half an hour waiting for our luggage, followed by an hour and a half drive to Borobudur, we sank into bed ready for the early get up for sunrise over Borobudur temple. Unfortunately, it took us until the final morning to get sunrise from the amazing temple. Our sunsets were non existent unfortunately - such is the cloud build up during the day in the tropical environment of Indonesia. We still managed to get some sort of acceptable photos. And staying in a hotel (while not a great hotel) right next to the main temple was much more acceptable to Miss T as she slept while Mum and Dad climbed the steep steps of the temple to take photos!

We had a great time cycling through the villages surrounding Borobudur, stopping at a house where the elderly couple made palm sugar for the village, a tofu making place and pottery centre, where M had yet another go at throwing clay. We cycled mostly the quiet roads of the villages, but travelled for a short time on the busy roads when travelling towards the markets. Certainly not the scary experience that we imagined - much safer than battling the school pick up time at home with all those mothers! Indonesian roads, while chaotic - drivers and motorcycle riders are so much more aware of each other and far more courteous than their Australian counterparts!
